Queer Women are Cool

- Marie, Kezia and Becky

You’re in Dunedin, a self-identified queer woman and you want to meet other queer women.  If you are a student, gone are the days when women’s studies had lesbian-only tutorials, and contrary to popular belief most people who take gender studies are actually straight (personal experience has proven this unfortunate fact).

So where do you meet other queer women in Dunedin…?

Ñ     Powder – The Queer Disco Bar.  Moving to “Metro”, keep your eye out for details…

Ñ      Social Soccer Games – The Purple Passions are a queer social soccer team, but we can assure you other soccer teams have queer women lurking somewhere! (especially the Otago Blues, if you’re good enough)

Ñ      The Laundromat – Washing those Y-fronts…

Ñ      The Queer Theory Section of the Library – it starts in HQ…

Ñ      Any Healtheries Food Store – for herbal teas, organic food (you get the drift)

Ñ      On any protest against rape or violence

Ñ      Buying that Angelina Jolie doll (Tombraider style yum!) in Toyworld…

Ñ      Humming “I am woman hear me roar” anywhere!

Or, you can do what some ‘other’ people (ahem, one of us) did, attend university women’s group (Fridays, 1pm) and hope.  No, seriously – hanging out in the Women’s Room (2nd floor of the Union Building) is a great way to meet some cool women, queer and straight.  And it has a lesbian events noticeboard, which you can subtlely check out for upcoming events.

Finally! The best way to meet queer women is to come along to our new group – “W.A.Q.D”.  Basically our aim is to provide a safe space for queer women in the community to hang out, have fun and meet new people.  Weekly social lunches will be run in the Women’s Room on Campus (times to be arranged for an early March start), and we hope to arrange activities such as ice skating, picnics, movies, beach trips, café hopping and whatever else you want!  We are particularly keen to provide events where children (and dogs!) can come along and have fun too.

If you’re interested, contact us at waqd@hermailcenter.com or leave a message with the Women’s Rights Officers (Rebecca and Jo) c/o OUSA.
